Health insurance for international students

26 Mar

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is intended to assist international students to meet the costs of medical and hospital care that they may need while in Australia. A condition of the Student visa requires that students maintain adequate health insurance for the duration of their visa.

From 1 July 2010 students must obtain OSHC for the proposed duration of their Student visa. Student visa applicants who have obtained OSHC prior to 1 July 2010 but do not lodge an application until after this date will not be asked to obtain further insurance. You will be expected to renew your policy when it expires.

Migrate to Sydney – part 2 (the end)

Business Visa

To migrate to Sydney using business visa, you have to demonstrate record of business or investment activity who are committed to use their investment skill over in Australia. Usually it’s for those of age over 45 years old.

There are 3 main options on business migration. They are Business Owner, Investor Class and Senior Executive.

Basically, those 3 ways / options are for those who has at least AUD 200,000 worth of assets with an annual turnover of at least AUD 500,000 two of 4 fiscal years immediately before applying. The person has to be either under 45 years old or 55 years old, depending of which category the applicant applying in.

Applicant can also applying for State / Territory government sponsorship. If such sponsorship is obtained, the requirements are significantly lower than those under the un-sponsored categories.

I’m personally not qualified enough to explaining this, but do let me know if you have any questions about Business Visa and I’ll try my best to help you.

Skilled Migration

Skilled Migration is the 2nd popular way other than Student visa; however it won’t be so easy as others as the Australian government kept changing the regulation depending on the economy forecast. The principle is about the same with Student visa, without the studying part. So the applicant need to know what is the skill ON-DEMAND in Australia first, then if they’re qualifying into that category, there would be a chance for them applying Australian permanent resident visa.

You might able to ask Australian Skills Assessing Authorities of your background, how to get your education background and work experience recognised by them before you lodged your application.

Then, the rest would be the same process as what it’s covered on Student visa section previously, which you can have additional points based on certain categories (Language, Family, Age etc) to fulfilled the Pass mark requirement.

The most convinience way to know your chance probably is on Visa Wizard section on Australia Immigration website, http://www.immi.gov.au/visawizard/

Migrate to Sydney – part 1

02 Mar

Australia is a land of opportunity. People found out that life in Australia is quite wonderful along with great weather and easy going people. However the migration process isn’t as wonderful as you think. Australia immigration process is extremely complex due to wide range of visa types and the immigration is constantly change the legislation.

Now, there is a couple of ways for people to migrate to Sydney. I’m not going to talk about spouse, visitor/tourist or parent visas as they’re quite straight forward compares with the others.

They are Business migration, Skilled migration, Student visa.

Those 3 ways are recommended by me personally which ranks the most famous ways uses by lots of people to migrate to Australia from other countries. However there is a tool provided by Australia Immigration which can be used to choose the right visa for you to come to Australia.

Here is the tool URL: http://www.immi.gov.au/visawizard/
In that tool, you can choose the right visa to be used to go to Australia based on your current condition and situation.

However if you wanted to go thru more deeper about those 3 methods I mentioned before, then you’re welcome to read thru the information provided on below. I’m going to start with the easiest and fastest way to come and live in Australia which is using Student visa.

Student visa

This is the easiest and fastest way to move and live in Australia. However it’s the most expensive way as well if you’re preferred to choose this way. If you interested to move to Australia and don’t mind to do further study, then this would be the best way for you to get your feet up straight to Australia.

Now read this carefully, Student visa would also bring more pain for you if you don’t know how to get around. What I provides here is basically the basic knowledge ONLY, you need to consult with Immigration Agent in order to get 100% accurate answer as for the complexity of Australian immigration law. I’ll recommend one reliable Australian immigration agent as I’ve got my Australian Permanent Resident visa also from this agent. You can find their detail from the ending section of this post.

Student visa is the only way if you want to move to Australia a.s.a.p AND don’t have any Australia recognised education background AND solid work experience which you can use later to apply Australia permanent resident visa via Skilled migration. If you do, you might want to try to apply thru Skilled migration way using the Visa Wizard tool I’ve mentioned above as it would cost you lesser and save lots of time as well.

Therefore it’s depend of what purpose of you wanting to move to Australia, the smartest way of course to have the opportunity to study in Australia plus having the option/opportunity to live and work in Australia after you finished the study by applying for Australian Permanent Resident visa which allow you to live and work without any condition. It would be the same principal with US green card.

Now, if you choose to go smart way to choose this path, then you need to choose which major you need to go in order make you eligible to apply Australian Permanent Resident visa after you graduated.

Due to the complexity of the different requirement of your original country for applying Student visa, here are the links you should have a look which based on Australian Immigration website.

Skilled Occupation List (SOL)

Skilled Occupation List (SOL)

On that document what you care is about SOL and Points for Skill columns ONLY as those are the ones you needed.

In order to be successful to get Australia permanent resident visa after you graduated, your application will need to be scored at least 120 points (or called Pass mark) in total. There is also be called Pool mark or 100 points.

So in nutshell, here is the explanation of how the score will be calculated based from.

Nominated Occupation (SOL) – Maximum 60 points
You can score 40,50, or 60 points for the Skilled Occupation List based on your education background. To obtain 60 points for your nominated occupation, you most likely need to have a degree or trade certificate and experience that meet Australian standards and specifically related to your occupation. If necessary, you must meet any registration requirements in Australia. In some cases, experience without formal qualification may be accepted.

English language ability – Maximum 25 points
The points determined from the score from IELTS test if you requires to take that. If you’re holding a passport from UK, Canada, New Zealand, USA and Republic of Ireland, you won’t be required to sit the IELTS.

Age - maximum 30 points
It can be divided into 30 points (18-29 years), 25 points (30-34 years), 20 points (35-39 years), and 15 points (40-44 years)

Work experience – maximum 10 points
10 points (if  you have work experience in your nominated occupation worth 60 points for at least 3 of the 4 years prior submitting your application), 5 points (if you have work experience in your nominated occupation worth 40 or 50 points for at least 3 of the 4 years prior submitting your application).

Spouse skill – 5 points
You’ll get an additional 5 points if your spouse also satisfies the basic requirements and has obtained a suitable skills assessment from relevant assessing authority or Australian Skill Assessing Authorities. You can find out what kind of Australian Skill Assessing Authorities on different post.

Family member – 5 points
If you have uncle, auntie who has permanent resident status or citizen in Australia, then you might able to get an additional 5 points if they’re willing to sponsor you.

…and other things.

So based of those criterias, if you can get 120 points or more in total, then you’ll be able to get Australian permanent resident visa which allow you to work and live in Australia.
